How To Spot Fake Honey?

Honey stands out as a unique food due to its composition and the process by which it is made. However, not all honey is created equal. The market is flooded with variations that may look like honey but lack its natural benefits and purity. Here’s how you can spot fake honey and ensure you’re getting the real deal:

  • Texture
    • Pure honey has a smooth, consistent texture that doesn't separate into layers. If you notice separation, it's likely not genuine honey.
  • Water Test
    • Drop a teaspoon of honey into a glass of water. Real honey will coalesce and sink to the bottom, while fake honey will start dissolving.
  • Flame Test
    • Dip a matchstick in honey and strike it. If it lights, the honey is pure. Adulterated or synthetic honey will prevent the match from igniting due to the moisture it contains.
  • Paper Test
    • Place a drop of honey on a piece of paper. If it spreads or gets absorbed quickly, it's not pure since natural honey takes a long time to get absorbed.
  • Taste and Aroma
    • Genuine honey has a distinct flavour and aroma that lingers, while fake honey tends to have a bland taste and no real scent.
  • Crystallization
    • Over time, real honey will crystallize, while fake honey will remain in a syrup-like state due to additives.
